2009... What's in store?

Mon Jan 5, 2009, 12:24 PM
OK, so 2008 was a bit of a soggy tissue, so to speak. Looking on the bright side i've got a 1Dmkii, old style black Macbook and got the chance to shoot Elton John (not like that...) and saw a shedload of bike racing.

In the meantime, i'm jobhunting for the 3rd time in 12 months - the company I was working for went into liquidation before the store officially opened. The recession just gets worse for a lot of us, eh?

This means i've got plenty of time to play with the camera, play on the xbox, do some weights/punchbag/road cycling and on top of that i'm learning to drive. It's about time I got a license for four wheels! As well as this, I might have the chance to shoot the racing from in front of the fences this coming season, but it's only a slight possibility so i'm not holding my breath...

As you can see from my last couple of shots, i've bought a light tent (about a tenner on fleabay) and made a ringflash adapter for my flash unit. I'll be experimenting with some more macro/flash/still life. Ideally I could do with the 105mm Sigma macro to really sort out the macro shots, but you could guess that I can't pull almost £200 from behind the sofa right now...

Anyway, enough of my sorrows. I hope the festive period was kind to you all and that 2009 will bring you plenty of luck and inspiration in equal measures.

What would you recommend for a first flashgun thatll fit a Nikon D40?

Though all else fails...Chuck Norris wont.
I'd buy a third party one like a jessops, tamrac or cobra... get a high guide number so you've got a nice powerful one.

then i'd look at these: [link]

the money you've saved not buying a nikon unit, you can get one of these and set up a small tripod off camera and get awesome shots like this guy's: [link]

only a suggestion, of course, but i'm looking to buy a tranny and receiver sometime soon to get some shots like that.

check out the rest of ruincircle's gallery too - he's pretty damn good.

Cheers dude.

Im guessing the remotes are for having if your flashgun was set to side? And you can use any type of flash with it? I think that would be really cool! His pics are amazing!

Thanks again.

The write-ups i've seen of the alienbees are for use with any flash, but you can get nikon-fit guns from quite a few different makes.

then you can just add the remote and receiver for some experimentation!

An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.
I rang steam packet today and it was 170 quid for a day trip! (That's a no by the way...)

Next year i'm going to the island, whether it's the TT or Southern 100. I'll book earlier and i'll hopefully be a bit more fluid next year!
